When it comes to partygoers, there are three types of people that we’re all very familiar with. First, there’s the person who you know that you could always count on to show up before the party actually begins. This is that person you could always count on to tell you what the best snacks are, who’s already at the party, and what crazy events may have already happened at the party prior to your arrival.
Then, there’s that person you know will always arrive at the party right on time. This is the person that if an invite says the party begins at 7pm—you could always count on them being there by no later than 7:15pm.
Lastly, there’s that person who you could always count on to show up beyond fashionably late. This is the person who, by the time they finally arrive at the party—all of the refreshments will be gone, several guests that they would have liked to have seen would have already left, and all of the party’s most interesting events are likely to have already taken place.
Throughout my years as a marketing manager, I’ve discovered that startups also fall into one of those three categories as well. Except that instead of either arriving to parties early, on time, or far too late—they'll arrive one of those ways on social media platforms.
These are the top five reasons why being tardy for the party on the new social network Bluesky could be to the disadvantage of your startup.
1. The early miners get the gold
If you've ever taken the time to have a lengthy discussion with an elderly person about their life, oftentimes, the majority of their biggest regrets usually aren’t focused on the things they’ve done. But rather the actions that they did not take for various reasons.
Notwithstanding that feeling of regret for not taking action doesn’t just apply to the elderly; most adults, regardless of age, could relate to wanting to kick themselves on the backside for not taking certain actions at some point (ask anyone who had the opportunity to purchase a share of Facebook stock for $32 a week after its IPO if they regret not doing so).
Similarly, you'll regret missing out on the opportunity to establish your startup early on Bluesky (the social network modeled after X which has now become one of the hottest social media platforms in the world since opening its registration to the general public in February of 2024)
As is the case with all new social media platforms—establishing an early presence on Bluesky could yield immeasurable social media marketing benefits for your brand. Among the top of that list of benefits is introducing your brand to a wider audience.
2. The X exodus
Due to the laxed changes in the platform’s moderation after the sale of the company to its... let’s just say, controversial Chairman/CTO—many users (including notable celebrities) have fled X for Bluesky in droves. According to reports, Bluesky’s recent surge in registrations, mostly due to users migrating from X—has led to the platform now surpassing the impressive 15 million user mark.
So, if your brand already account on X to appeal to a certain type of audience—there’s a great chance that a chunk of that audience is also on Bluesky. Which is another great reason why your startup should be there as well.
3. Brand awareness and SEO interests
Establishing a presence on a new and poppin’ social media platform like Bluesky could especially prove to be invaluable as it pertains to helping your startup attain one thing that each year, startups pay billions of dollars for—which is an increase in brand awareness.
And what’s more, a boost in brand awareness also has a domino effect. Often leading to an increase in traffic to your company’s website. Which generates backlinks—a key component in search engine ranking.
4. Content marketing benefits
Similar to a television or print ad, the more people who come across your startup’s content marketing materials—the better. And unlike some social media platforms (including X), Bluesky rewards publishers on their platform by not demoting user’s posts that contain links.
Which means that your startup’s social media posts containing links to your blog or homepage will not be ranked lower than a normal post.
On the surface, that may not seem significant, but the reason why this is huge is because it allows for links containing your content marketing to be posted on the platform and be seen on the timelines of more users than that of those platforms that demote posts containing links.
5. To secure your brand’s screen name
The old adage, “Use it or lose it,’’ could apply to a myriad of things. But ask anyone whose brand or company’s domain name was registered by someone before they had a chance to secure it, and they’ll tell you—it’s much better to arrive early and be the one to use it—than to arrive late and as a result—lose it.
In this case, the aforementioned “it” happens to be your brand’s username on an up-and-coming social media platform that is becoming more popular each day.
By not creating an account for your startup on Bluesky as soon as possible—your brand’s username will be rendered vulnerable. And therefore, could be available to anyone who chooses to secure it before you could.
Which is obviously something that could easily be prevented simply by you creating an account for your startup on Bluesky.
